Background

  • Dr Wong Nan Soon is an oncologist practising at Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, Singapore.
  • His subspecialty interests are in breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancer.
  • He completed his advanced specialty training in general medical oncology in 2003, and subsequently a clinical fellowship subspecialising in breast medical oncology in Sunnybrook and Women’s Health Science Centre in Canada, where he trained under world-renowned breast oncologists including Professor Kathleen Pritchard.
  • He was promoted to the position of consultant in 2006 and subsequently rose to the position of senior consultant and chief of the breast team in the department of medical oncology at National Cancer Centre, Singapore.
  • In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Singapore National Medical Research Council overseas research fellowship to develop expertise in phase I clinical trials at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. During this year, he broadened his subspecialty interests to encompass gastrointestinal cancers, and underwent further training in biostatistics and clinical research methodology.
  • In 2005, he was awarded the Novartis Oncology Young Canadian Investigator Award, and was involved in more than 30 local and international pharmaceutical and investigator-initiated clinical trials, and held a number of institutional and national level research grants. He has contributed more than 50 abstracts and papers in both local and international oncology journals, including Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research and Annals of Oncology.
  • He was a clinical teacher at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, from 2006 – 2011 and served as examiner for the final MBBS exams. He has also lectured at Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Health Sciences in the field of oncology to advanced diploma nursing students. He was appointed a member of the Specialist Training Committee for medical oncology from 2009 – 2012, where he served to ensure standards of medical oncology training and as an examiner for the medical oncology exit exams.
  • In 2011, he was appointed adjunct associate professor in the department of clinical sciences at Duke-NUS Medical School.
  • He was the former director of public and patient education, and deputy director in the division of community outreach and philanthropy at the National Cancer Centre. He was also vice president of the Singapore Society of Oncology, board member of the Chapter of Medical Oncologists of Singapore, and chairperson of the medical treatment fund subcommittee at Singapore Cancer Society.
  • He is a member of the Singapore Society of Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and Hepatopancreatobiliary Association of Singapore.
  • He has published widely in international peer-reviewed journals and major international cancer meetings in the areas of breast cancer pathology, epidemiology, novel therapeutics, chemotherapy and endocrine therapy, as well as colorectal cancer therapeutics.
