- Dr Justin Tan is one of the few fully-trained paediatric rheumatologists in Singapore’s private practice and one of the few in the region fully trained in paediatric musculoskeletal ultrasound, which is a distinctive skill in the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of managing children with rheumatic diseases.
- Dr Tan earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Malaya in 2003. He obtained his membership of Royal College of Paediatrics and Childhealth (UK) in 2008. Dr Tan underwent paediatric training at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) and graduated from his advanced specialist training in paediatrics in 2011. In 2012, he completed his fellowship training in paediatric rheumatology.
- He received the 2nd ACP Young Investigator Pilot Grant in 2014 to study vitamin D deficiency in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus. He worked closely with Associate Professor Thaschawee Arkachaisri, collaborating with regional paediatric rheumatologists in the Asia-Pacific Pediatric Rheumatology Education and Research Network (AsPREN). He was also involved in the Registry for Childhood Onset Rheumatic Diseases (RECORD) which is an internet-based registry established in 2009 with the support of the National Arthritis Foundation (NAF) and International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR).
- He undertook basic and translational research as one of the collaborators with Singhealth Translational Immunology and Inflammation Centre at Academia, SGH Campus under the stewardship of Professor Salvatore Albani. His research interests focus on the descriptive studies and outcome measures of childhood onset autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal ultrasound in paediatric rheumatology.
- Dr Tan teaches extensively, in his position as an adjunct instructor with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, DUKE-NUS Graduate Medical School and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He also teaches in paediatric residents in Singhealth’s ACGME Paediatric Residency Training Programme. Dr Tan was actively involved in training more rheumatologists for the region under the KKH Paediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Programme. In 2017, Dr Tan was appointed as an adjunct assistant professor by the DUKE-NUS Graduate Medical School.
